BACK TO ALTERNATIVE ENERGY PRODUCTS: SOLAR GEYSERS

Geysers consume the most electricity in the typical home. The Solar Geyser uses heat from the sun to provide free hot water at all times. Perfect for hair salons, homes, dive schools, game lodges, farms etc.

Information on solar panels and storage tanks that SunTank uses in its water heating systems:

Solar collector / panels

  • Area - 1.5m²
  • Heating manifold - Copper tubing: risers - 15mm, headers - 22mm
  • Collection surface - Heat coated aluminum
  • Outer casing - Heat coated aluminum
  • Insulation - High-density polyurethane + aluminum foil cover
  • Top cover - 4mm hail resistant glass

Solar storage tanks

  • Capacity, liters - 100, 200, 300, 450
  • Heating method - Direct, Indirect
  • Heat exchanger - stainless steel double jacket
  • Pressure cylinder - 1.5mm stainless steel, corrosion resistant
  • Working pressure - 400 kPa
  • Insulation - High density polyurethane
  • External casing - Aluminum sheet with fiberglass caps
  • Back up element - 2kW, 3kW, 4kW

BENEFITS:

  • Solar Geysers are big money savers.
  • As most people know, geysers are one of the biggest electricity users in any home. By using the abundance of sun in South Africa, it only makes sense to use it to provide free hot water.
  • They are expensive to buy and install, but, they pay themselves back within 3 years.
  • Once you install a solar geyser, you immediately start saving on your monthly electricity bill – this saving will take anything between 1.5-3 years to catch up with the capital expenditure, thereafter, you have free hot water!

HOW SOLAR GEYSERS WORK:

  • Each solar geyser has 3 components: Solar Panel(s), Geyser and Electrical Element (as back-up)
  • The sun heats up the panel, which consists of a glass surface, with black plates underneath.
  • Underneath the black plates, is a network of copper tubing, which contains a mixture of water and anti-freeze (Which prevents expansion and damage to the copper piping in freezing conditions).
  • As the mixture heats up, pressure builds up and a flow is created.
  • The warm water flows up towards the geyser, where, by contact or "heat exchange" heats up the surrounding water in the geyser.
  • This process continues until the water is extremely warm.
  • In the event of cloudy conditions, the electrical element will switch on and heat up the water, as any normal geyser.
  • Due to exceptional insulation, the geyser maintains most of the heat over night. Losing +-3 degrees, where a normal geyser will loose up to 8-10 degrees over night and switch on once again.

INSTALLATIONS:

  • When installing the solar geyser, you have 2 options: Normal On-Roof installation OR In-Roof.
  • All panels have to face North for efficiency.
  • The panels have to be lower than the geyser component.
  • With a normal on-roof installation, a custom made bracket keeps the system in place on top of the roof, either a flat roof OR a pitched roof.
  • In-Roof installation can be tricky and one of our installers will have to determine whether it's possible or not. Sometimes, it's impossible to fit the geyser into the roof.
  • Normal On-Roof installations cost R1500.00, which includes 4m piping and pipe insulation, while In-Roof installations cost R2550.00, including 4m piping and pipe insulation.
  • Extra piping will have to be quoted for individually.
  • Installations take 1 day to complete.
