South Africa is in a power supply crisis. Power demand is rising and there are not enough power plants to supply the power we all need. Because of this, Eskom is implementing "load shedding", which means that they are cutting power to certain areas, at certain periods, to lessen the huge demand on their plants. Government is also implementing the Power Conservation Programme (“PCP”) to ensure that electricity users are saving at least 10% of their usage. According to the official PCP documentation, electricity tariffs for the 10% that is not saved will range between R2.80 and R18.00 per kWh versus the current Mega-flex tariff of R0.22. These penalties will hit industry hard and every effort should be made to curb consumption to avoid this.

The Eskom Build Programme is underway and projects to build new power plants have been approved and construction has already started on the large Medupi Power Station in Lephalale, Limpopo. The problem is, a power plant takes 5 to 10 years to be completed, if they started construction in 2008, the plants will only start being operational in 2013 – a lot of time for the power crisis to settle in and affect all of us.
